How to Keep Snakes Away From Toilet (Water Closet)
Typically, you’d carry your phone or a magazine into the restroom to keep yourself busy while you use the toilet.
However, that is no longer the case as everyone has become wary of unknown dangers lurking in the water closet since the unfortunate death of a woman who was bitten by a venomous snake while sitting on the toilet.
Lance Corporal Ogah Bercy
A Nigerian Air Force Corporal, Ogah Bercy wasn’t ready for what happened when she sat down to use the toilet in her own home on November 19. The Air Force woman attached to the Defence Intelligence Agency was allegedly bitten by a snake while using the restroom at the NAF Base on Bill Clinton Drive in Abuja.
Even though the victim reacted quickly by driving to the NAF hospital, there was a delay in administering the anti-venom, eventually leading to her death. According to a report released by the Punch from one of her NAF neighbours, the breed of the snake wasn’t disclosed, but it was confirmed to be a highly venomous one.
Snakebites have become a massive threat to public health in Nigeria. While speaking at the International Snakebite Awareness Day in September, Health minister Adeleke Olorunimbe Mamora declared that up to 20,000 people are bitten by snakes in Nigeria every year. This results in about 2,000 death and further 2,000 amputations after the encounters.
Since the toilet is a common hideout spot for these dangerous reptiles, most Nigerians have been looking for effective ways to ensure that these animals don’t make it into their water closet.
Keep snakes from toilet
Following Corporal Bercy’s unfortunate incident, many people have developed different methods to keep snakes away from toilet. One of the unorthodox methods that have been found on social media is the use of salt. A couple of users have suggested that pouring an entire sachet of salt into the toilet is enough to chase the snakes. Others have listed kerosene and petrol as effective options to keep snakes away from toilet.
The comment sections of various posts have also been filled with people advertising fumigation services that will effectively rid your home of snakes. While some are actually effective at repelling them temporarily, everyone is eager for a more permanent solution, especially for the toilet.

Non-return valve
The non-return valve has been found to be a solution to this toilet-reptile problem. This plumbing material has been designed to restrict the flow of water and other materials in only one direction.
Typically, it is used in pipes to ensure that the medium flows in only one direction where pressure conditions might otherwise cause it to flow towards another way. Homeowners in countries prone to flood install this material into their drainage pipe to keep the water from getting in. Thankfully, it does more than keep water out.
Once this valve is fitted into your toilet pipe, it allows water and other waste to flow freely outside but keeps snakes away from toilet, along with other dangerous animals that may want to swim through.
This valve can be installed to keep snakes away from your toilet permanently after you may have carried out other procedures to chase the dangerous reptiles from your surroundings.
