The Nigerian government has denied reports that the neighboring country, Benin Republic is set to become its 37th state.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama was quoted as saying that the president of the French-speaking country wanted his country to be part of Nigeria.
A fresh statement from the ministry of foreign affairs has denied the report and explained it better.
The ministry reported that Onyeaoma was misunderstood by this statement. It added that Nigeria didn’t hold ambition to acquire Benin Republic as a part of the country.
The President of Benin instead wanted both countries to be very close and work together in various areas.
Nigeria is the most populous black nation in the world, with a population of over 200 million people.
Benin on the other hand has a population slightly above 12 million in total.
Nigeria and Benin are connected by history and the countries share borders in several areas.
