The Central Bank of Nigeria is taking steps to crack down on anyone that is caught mutilating, defacing, spraying, and selling naira notes.

One Assistant Director at the Currency Operations Department, Aladeen Badajo revealed this during a sensitization exercise at Abeokuta.
The apex bank has out a law in place to jail offenders for six months, impose a fine of N50,000 or both.

During the programme, Nigerians were urged to see the notes as the identity of the country and treat it with respect.
Badejo also stressed the need to handle the notes with care due to the high amount that is spent on reprinting currency.

The Acting Director, Corporate Communications Department, Osita Nwanisiobi was also present to educate people about the importance of sensitization programmes.
He revealed that these programmes will provide the bank with opportunities to receive feedback from the public, which will be taken into consideration during policy development.
