
House of Reps Set to Scrap NYSC as Bill Reaches Second Phase

A bill that is looking to repeal the NYSC act has gotten past the first reading and has been billed for a second reading

The incessant killing of corp members and insecurity across the country has been listed as the major causes of the repeal bill
The federal government may move to scrap the National Youth Service Corps scheme after a sponsored bill by Mr Awaji-Inombek Abiante, passed the first reading.

The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Alteration Bill in 2020 is seeking the cancel the NYSC act.
Mr Awaji-Inombek Abiante listed many reasons why the bill should be scrapped, which can be seen below;
They have been continuous killing and kidnapping innocent corps members in some parts of the country.
Public and private organisations are no longer employing qualified graduates but using corps members as labour with pay.
Corps members can now be posted to their geopolitical zone due to insecurity in the country and that defeats the purpose of the exercise.

The NYSC was established as far back as May 22, 1973, under the administration of General Yakubu Gowon.

The program planned to reintegrate the nation after a civil war that caused severe disruption.
