Farmers in Zamfara, Kastina now pay tax to bandits before harvesting crops

Farmers in the Northern part of Nigeria are allegedly being forced to negotiate with armed bandit before they can go to farm and harvest their crops.

Some social media users on Twitter shared there experience while berating the government for going after #ENDSARS protesters and social media bill instead of paying attention to important issues that affects the livelihood of the citizens.

While it’s unknown if this is a widespread occurrence in the restive North of Nigeria, notable states mentioned by the victims were Kastina and Zamfara states.

@AM_Saleeem had tweeted:

Bandits are collecting sum of N800,000 as tax from local farmers in Ɗan Kurmi under Maru LG of Zamfara, but social media bill and EndSars protest is more important to Northern Governors than insecurity.

Then, @aminuyaro_ replied, sharing his own story.

Same with Yankara community under Faskari LG of Katsina state. Before they allow you harvest your crops, you’ve to negotiate with them and pay a minimum of 300k. The bigger the farm, the higher the price. If you refuse to pay the ransom, they’ll burn the crops.

Another Twitter user, Ibrahim Umar Rufa’i @khaliifa_Umar corroborated what the other two earlier said:

Exactly that’s what happened to us in Damari village under sabuwa LG, katsina state. We have to negotiate with d bandits before they allow us to harvest our crops.
