ASUU Strike: Nigerian University Students Protest

  • It’s been almost 3 months since the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) started its nationwide strike.
  • Some students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma staged a protest in Benin over the strike on Wednesday.
  • The ASUU strike protest resulted in an online movement with hashtag #EndASUUStrike.

It’s been almost 3 months since the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) started its strike after a fallout in the agreement with the federal government in 2021.

ASUU Strike

On February 14, 2022, ASUU started with an initial 4-week total strike to build on its unresolved demands with the federal government.

On March 14, 2022, ASUU extended the strike by another 2 months, due to the Federal government’s “unseriousness” and failure to address the problems.

Meanwhile, every attempt at negotiation between ASUU and the Federal government has proven abortive as both parties blamed each other for the breakdown.

ASUU Strike

Since the start of the ASUU strike, Nigerian University students have been forced to stay at home. Many have now taken to the streets and social media to voice their discontent.

On Wednesday, some of the students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, staged a protest in Benin, Edo state.

This protest resulted in an online movement tagged #EndASUUStrike, and students who couldn’t join the physical protest expressed their grievances online using the #EndASUUStrike hashtag.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had earlier impelled the union to accept dialogue, stating that the federal government is worried about students being forced to stay home.

At the same time, Comrade Sunday Asefon, the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students blames the government.

During the breakfast program on Channels Television, he accused Nigerian leaders of being unmindful of the plight of the students who are affected by the ongoing strike.

He also claimed that the government was not committed to resolving the issue to put an end to the ASUU strike. Finally, Comrade Asefon warned that the street protest which started in Benin on Wednesday would spread to other parts of the nation.
