Nigeria’s president Muhammdu Buhari is known not only for taking tough decisions but for defending them too. In his Independence Day address.
On Thursday morning of October 1, the president delivered his nationwide address on the occasion of Nigeria@60.
60 years of Independence was a big one but Nigerians have little to show for it.
What should have been an assurance of hope for Nigerians amidst economic challenges sparked criticisms from Nigerians after the President’s defense of the hike in fuel price went viral.
The matter almost led to nationwide strike-action from the organized labor but it was averted after some conditions were met.
It was strange that the president went on to defend the hike even when negotiations were still ongoing.
It is a clear signal that there will be no going back on the fuel price hike since the president has cited the oil prices in Saudi Arabia as the reason for his decision.
Buhari expressly stated that it made no sense for oil (fuel) to be cheaper in Nigeria than Saudi Arabia which is one of the world’s largest crude oil producers.
The statement attributed to Buhari sparked outrage as Nigerians criticized the president for trying to justify the hike.
