Dele Giwa: Letter bomb made me deaf for 5 years says Kayode Soyinka

It was on 19th October 1986 that Nigerian journalist Dele Giwa was assassinated. He was killed by a letter bomb that exploded when he tried to open it thinking it was a story.

Journalist, Kayode Soyinka

Although a lot is said about the assassination of Dele Giwa, not much is said about Kayode Soyinka’s troubles. For five years the journalist said he did not hear from his ears. There were sounds in the ear for those years and Doctors could not do anything about it.

He was told that it could heal with time. The incident is a stain on Nigeria’s image. However, he lamented that 34 years on no one has been brought to book for the assassination of Dele Giwa.

Also, he said that as long as justice is not done, such ugly incidents will repeat itself as in the case of the assassination of Chief Bola Ige. Kayode made the revelations in his recent book titled “Born into Journalism; Memoirs of a reporter” to mark his colic’s 34th death anniversary.
