In her confession, Fatima said she hid the phone in the cooler of soup to beat Prisons officials. She claimed she lived in Fagba, Iju-Saga area of Lagos and that she met her boyfriend 2 years ago.
Fatima hid the phone, wrapped in a cellophane paper, in the soup.
In her confession, she added: “I know they will not allow me to take it to him in the prison, that was why I decided to smuggle it.”
Confirming the incident, the Controller of Prisons, Ogun State command, CP Benson Abolade, said Fatima’s move was against the Prison operation and the action was a threat to national security.

He further stated that further actions will be taken.
Though they are banned, cell phones are prevalent in prison. Over time, it has been discovered that prisoners use the phones to help control the flow of drugs both in and out of prisons, to organize protests, to set up Facebook pages, and in some cases, to conduct interviews with the media.
Mostly, though, they use the phones to stay in touch with family members on the outside. The reason Fatima’s boyfriend smuggled the phone to her boyfriend may not be unconnected to the above, although it was not stated in the report.
