The NSPCC has declared some apps in the metaverse to be dangerous after a recent investigation by BBC News. A researcher who posed as a 13-year-old girl claims that she witnessed grooming, sexual content, racism, and rape threat during a recent visit to the virtual reality world.
The BBC News researcher who used a metaverse app with a minimum age rating of 13, said that she was able to access rooms where avatars were seen stimulating sex. She was also shown sex toys, condoms, and approached by adult men in the digital space.
What is the metaverse?
The metaverse is a name given to a virtual-reality world that can be accessed by people wearing VR headsets. The technology which was only previously used for gaming has now been adapted for use in other areas, including work, concerts, and cinema.

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg seems to think that this virtual world is the future of the internet. He recently announced the company’s rebrand to Meta, so it can fully focus on its metaverse ambitions.
While the “dangerous” metaverse app was not made by Meta, it can be downloaded from an app store on Facebook’s Meta Quest. Users are said to have access to adult content, with no age verification checks.
