America’s president Joe Biden on Thursday slammed Russian President Vladimir Putin and promised to sanction him for Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which is sparking one of Europe’s biggest conflicts in decades.
Speaking from the White House of Thursday evening, Biden called Russia’s invasion a “naked aggression” and promised to make the Russian leader a “pariah on the international stage”.
“Putin is the aggressor. Putin chose this war and now he and his country will bear the consequences.”
The new sanctions will prevent the exportation of some products from the U.S to Russia and it also affects financial institutions and elites associated with Putin.
Biden also disclosed that NATO will hold a summit on Friday to determine the next steps, while additional U.S forces will be deployed to Germany.
The latest punishments follow a round of sanctions that were issued against Russia after Putin ordered the deployment of troops into Moscow-backed breakaway regions in the eastern part of Ukraine.
Moscow launched a severe attack on Ukraine early on Thursday, bombing cities and infrastructure as troops attempted to invade Kyiv.
