Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr Sacked as NFF Names Replacement

  • Gernot Rohr has been sacked from his role as the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles after more than 5 years in charge
  • The German takes a bow being the longest-serving coach of the Super Eagles and qualifying Nigeria for the forthcoming AFCON
  • Austine Eguavoen will now take over as the interim coach of the national team with the AFCON set to begin in a few weeks

The Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with Cape Verde has been confirmed as the last game with Gernot Rohr in charge after the german tactician was sacked on Sunday.

The NFF removed Rohr as the team’s coach and replaced him with former player and coach Augustine Eguavoen in the interim.

The changes come only a few weeks to the commencement of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria is set to square up against other African rivals Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau in Group D.

In a statement made available to the media, the NFF general secretary Mohammed Sanusi said:

“The relationship between the Nigeria Football Federation and Mr. Rohr has come to an end. We thank him for his services to the Super Eagles and Nigeria,”

Eguavoen will lead Nigeria into the 2021 AFCON games in Cameroon and he will be assisted by Salisu Yusuf (chief coach), Paul Aigbogun (assistant coach), Joseph Yobo (assistant coach), and others.

Former Super Eagles stars’ Austin Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, and Garba Lawal will provide technical support and serve as ambassadors for the crew.

Gernot Rohr was named as the manager of three-time AFCON winners Nigeria in 2016, and he led the team to a third-place finish in the competition in 2019.
