Brazilian footballer Robinho has lost his final appeal against a conviction of him of taking part in the gang rape of a woman in Italy in 2013.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court in Rome upheld the previous ruling which effectively sentences the former AC Milan forward to nine years in prison.
The footballer star and five other Brazilians were found guilty of assaulting a 22-year-old woman in a nightclub.
This is the second time that the sentence will be upheld after a court ruled that it stands in December 2020, following an initial appeal.

Robinho may avoid sentencing for his crimes as he is in Brazil and his home country’s constitution bans the extradition of citizens.
Italy may however request that he serves his sentence in the South American country.
