More than $4 million in cryptocurrency donations have poured in for Ukraine to aid the country’s defense of capital Kyiv, according to blockchain analytics firm, Elliptic.
The donations were made hours after Ukrainian officials asked for assistance to repel Russia’s invasion, on Twitter. The officials disclosed that the government will begin accepting cryptocurrency donations, and attached two separate addresses, one tied to bitcoin, and the other tied to ether and tether.
The quick jump in the donations made was triggered by a single donation of nearly $1.9 million from a single unknown user. Elliptic Chief Scientist, Tom Robinson disclosed in a mail that the donation was associated with the auction of NFTs that helped raise funds for Australian WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange.
The money raised so far is an addition to more than $5 million that has been raised by non-governmental organizations and volunteer groups in the country, since the beginning of the invasion on Thursday.
Altogether, almost $10 million has been raised in donations for Ukraine to support its military. As Russian troops continue trying to break into Kyiv, Forbes has reported that at least 198 Ukrainians have died while more than 1,000 are wounded.
