Man Spends 8 Years Searching For Bitcoin Wallet Containing $350 Million

  • In 2013, a man threw his old PC hard drive into the trash, adding it to a mountain of rubbish at his local landfill site in Newport, Wales, UK
  • This man wasn’t aware that that hard drive contained 7,500 BTC in a Bitcoin wallet, worth £500,000 at that time and $357 million today
  • Since then, he has spent 8 years searching through a dumpsite the size of a football pitch for his million-dollar wallet

While doing some Spring cleaning in 2013, a man from Newport Wales, UK threw out his old PC hard drive into the trash, adding it to a mountain of rubbish at his local dumpsite.

Bitcoin Wallet

At that time, James Howells wasn’t aware that the hard drive contained a Bitcoin wallet filled with 7500 BTC, worth $357 million today.

Over the past 8 years, Howells has spent so much time crawling through mounds of rubbish trying to get his missing wallet in a landfill site the size of a football pitch.

During an interview with the Guardian in 2013, months after the incident, Howell said that he was taken to the site by a truck driver who revealed that the hard drive will be three or four feet down the landfill by now.

“I’m at the point where it’s either laugh about it or cry about it. Why aren’t I out there with a shovel now? I think I’m just resigned to never being able to find it.”

Howell has frequently stated that he believes that his fortune may need to be found but that hasn’t stopped him from searching.

In a last-ditch effort to recover his fortune, he proposed a deal to residents of the local town to join in the search, with the promise of millions if it is found.

Bitcoin fraud

His plans were however met with refusal by the Newport council as it denied volunteers permission to enter the site.

The council cited the ecological damage trawling through buried rubbish would cause as the reason for its refusal, added to the uncertainty that the hard drive even lays there.

Howell accumulated the Bitcoin fortune in his lost Bitcoin wallet by mining during the early days of the cryptocurrency.

Like other crypto assets, Bitcoin could not be backed up in the early days of mining, which led to several unfortunate cases of Bitcoin lost due to lost or damaged bitcoin wallet.
