El Salvador Begins Bitcoin Mining From Volcano

  • El Salvador has officially begun Bitcoin mining using the energy that is harnessed from volcanoes
  • So far, the Central American country has mined 0.00599179 BTC worth $269 with the green energy
  • President Nayib Bukele has disclosed that the mining project is still in the beta phase, and new mining equipment is about to be installed

El Salvador has mined 0.00599179 BTC worth $269, using power that was harnessed from volcanoes in a first for the country.

The president of the country Nayib Bukele tweeted about the progress with volcano-powered bitcoin mining on Friday morning.

Earlier on Tuesday, he posted a teaser video showing government-branded mining rigs that were set to be installed in the energy factory in the thick of a forest surrounded by a volcano.

Thu indicates that the president has made good on his promise to mine Bitcoin with 100% clean and renewable 0 emissions energy from volcanoes.

His Tweet on Friday however indicated that the mining project was still a work in progress and other mining equipments were set to be installed.

El Salvador is known as the “land of the volcanoes” and the country already generates more than 25% of its energy using the hot lava.

The move indicates El Salvador’s commitment to succeed in the use of its new legal tender- Bitcoin.

Following the announcement of Bitcoin as legal tender in the Central American country, the government has added BTC to its balance sheet and launched its own virtual wallet- Chivo.
