The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned people not to describe the Omicron variant of COVID 19 as mild, stating that it is killing people around the world.

This is coming after recent studies suggest that the variant is less likely to cause severe illness than Delta and other COVID variants.

WHO chief Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus however revealed that the record number of people contracting the virus has left health centers overwhelmed.

On Monday, the United States set a new daily record after over 1 million people tested positive for COVID in 24 hours.

The UN’s health agency disclosed that global cases of COVID 19 worldwide have gone up by over 71% in the past week.

Speaking at the press conference on Thursday, Dr. Tedros said:

“While Omicron does appear to be less severe compared to Delta, especially in those vaccinated, it does not mean it should be categorized as mild,”

“Just like previous variants, Omicron is hospitalizing people and it is killing people.
“In fact, the tsunami of cases is so huge and quick, that it is overwhelming health systems around the world.”

The Omicron variant is highly contagious and is capable of infecting people regardless of vaccination status.
