Omicron Variant: WHO Issues Strong COVID 19 Warning

  • The World Health Organisation has warned countries to prepare for the spread of the COVID 19 Omicron variant
  • Scientists have expressed concerns that the new variant has an unusually high number of mutations, which means it could be more transmissible
  • The Delta variant remains the dominant mutation, accounting for more than 90% of COVID 19 cases around the world

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has told countries to be on alert about the spread of the COVID 19 omicron variant.

This information was released by WHO Spokesperson, Christian Lindmeier, while he was speaking in Geneva on Friday.

Lindmeier also stated that data suggesting that Omicron was more transmissible were in the early stage.

While WHO urges caution regarding the mutation, it has urged countries not to panic as scientists continue to examine it.

Experts had expressed concern over the unusually high number of mutations, stating that the new variant has the potential to be more transmissible and resistant to vaccines.

According to NAN, WHO had disclosed that it could an additional two weeks to determine the actual threat the mutation poses.
