The Minister of State for Health, Olorunnimbe Mamora criticised developed countries access to the COVID 19 vaccine when African countries have no access to them.
The minister said this while speaking at organised by The Conversation Africa on Thursday.
According to Dr Mamora, Nigeria is already working towards the production of its own vaccine to make up for the shortage in the country.
A local company, Bio-Vaccine Nigeria Limited which is supported by both the government and a private firm is working towards manufacturing the vaccines.
He said;
“We have every need to do that in light of what is happening on the global stage. Right now, a lot of countries in Africa and even Nigeria can’t have access to vaccines.
“We can only hope to get over that or we have our own manufacturing hub in Nigeria and that is what we are working towards achieving.”
Dr Mamora added that the sudden rise of the pandemic has made the need for vaccine manufacturing more important than ever.
This will be used to continue the vaccination process as the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), has announced that the country is close to exhausting the first batch of vaccines received.
