Moderna’s chief medical officer Paul Burton has disclosed that the company will release an updated version of the vaccine by early 2022.

The news of the modification comes amid the emergence of the omicron variant of COVID 19, which has begun to spread globally.

Barton disclose that Moderna was currently examining the ability of the current vaccine to provide protection against the variant.

He added, that if a new vaccine was required, the earliest that it could be mass-produced is 2022.

Health officials have warned about the ability of the Omicron variant which was discovered in South Africa to spread rapidly.

Cases of this variant are already being recorded in other countries such as Israel and Belgium. This has triggered a spate of travel restrictions across Europe, Asia, and North America.

The UK has also recorded two cases of the virus already and experts are predicting that it may have also reached the United States.

The variant has multiple mutations, which make it easier for it to spread easily but the symptoms are beloved to be milder.
