WHO has announced the launch of a new strategy that will scale up genomic surveillance to tackle the future threat of the virus
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has revealed that despite its best efforts to defeat COVID 19, the world lags behind in vaccination. In a statement that was released on Monday by WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, about a third of the global population is yet to receive a single dose of the COVID 19 vaccine, including more than 83% of Africans.
While announcing the appalling vaccination campaign, Ghebreyesus disclosed that the WHO was launching a new strategy to scale up genomic surveillance for deadly pathogens. This strategy will make it easier for the health body to tackle future threats of the virus.
According to the WHO boss, COVID 19 is now responsible for the death of more than 6 million people while more than 483 million have been infected with the virus.

Meanwhile, the UN health agency also unveiled the updated Strategic Preparedness, Readiness, and Response Plan for COVID. The new plan prepares for the evolution of the virus and lays out possible scenarios that the world may have to manage.
To round off his statement, Ghebreyesus urged more people to receive the COVID 19 vaccine as it is the “most powerful tool” at the world’s disposal currently.
