COVID 19 Vaccine: Nigeria to Resume First Dose Vaccination
-
Nigeria is set to resume giving out the first dose of the COVID 19 vaccine as the country expects another 4 million doses
-
First dose vaccination had been earlier halted to ensure that there is enough vaccine to complete the process for everyone who received the first dose
-
At the moment, 2 million people have received the first dose of the vaccine while 700,000 have received a second dose
Nigeria is set to resume first dose vaccination a few months after halting the process to save supply for second dose vaccination.
This is because the country is expecting a shipment of 4 million doses of the COVID 19 vaccine in August.
So far, 2 million people have received the first dose of the COVID 19 jab while 700,000 have received the second dose.
The country has been rationing an initial dose of 3.92 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine that was received through the Covax initiative in March.
After being unable to secure an extra supply of the vaccine, vaccination centres were ordered to halt the process to ensure enough is left over for the second jab.

The halt is no longer necessary as the director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib has reported that Nigeria expects a new shipment of 3.92 million doses.
According to Dr Shuaib, vaccination centres will now be open to people above 18 years who want to receive a first shot of the vaccine.
While the NPHCDA boss didn’t reveal where the vaccine will come from, he pointed out that the G7 leaders were committed to distributing 1 billion doses of COVID 19 vaccine to countries with low access.
