The United States government has announced plans to share 55 million COVID 19 vaccine doses.

A report by Reuters has revealed that 75% of the vaccine will be shared among countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America.

41 million doses will be shared through the COVAX programme with Africa, Asia, and Latin America set to receive 10 million, 16 million, and 14 million doses of the vaccine respectively.

US to donate COVID 19 vaccine

The US government also stated that 14 million doses will be shared based on “regional priorities” to countries like Colombia, Argentina, Iraq, Ukraine and Gaza.

A statement by the White House’s Spokesperson Jen Psaki reads

“We have plenty of doses to share with the world, but this is a Herculean logistical challenge.

“We have announced today where these doses are going. We will continue to announce as they land on the ground and as they are being shipped, and we’re looking forward to doing that as quickly as possible.”

The 55 million doses will be taken from the US’ supply as soon as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves.

It will include Pfizer Inc, Moderna Inc, Johnson & Johnson, and AstraZeneca’s vaccines.

The United States has also demanded that the vaccine be offered to health workers and those at risk.

Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Argentina, Colombia, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are among the countries to receive the COVID 19 vaccine through direct sharing.

It is worth noting that the federal government of Nigeria also announced plans to secure vaccines from the US in a bid to vaccinate the majority of the population.
