COVID 19: Nigeria Records 1,584 New Infections as Lagos Drives Increase

  • Out of the total new cases recorded, Lagos led the way as the nation’s epicenter of the virus with 906 cases

Lagos state is driving Nigeria’s COVID 19 surge after a total of 1,584 new infections were recorded on Friday.

Despite being Nigeria’s smallest state, Lagos has an estimated population of over 21 million people, more than any other state in the country.

This means that about 6,871 people live in every square kilometer of the state, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported that out of the 1,584 new infections recorded on Friday, Lagos state had 906 cases.

This indicates an increase of 307 infections from the 599 cases that were recorded in the state for the previous day.

The FCT and Rivers followed with 258 and 217 new infections respectively while Edo and Oyo states had 85 and 50 cases.

Ogun State recorded 16 cases; Ondo (14), Bayelsa (12), Osun (10), Bauchi (9), and Kano (7).


The NCDC’s update indicates that Friday’s recorded infection brings Nigeria’s total cases to 222,655, with 211,373 people discharged.
