
African Union Urges African Countries To Continue Using COVID Vaccine

The African Union (AU) has urged African countries not to discontinue the use of the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine despite concerns of blood clots.

The AU’s advice is coming after 8 European countries including Ireland, Denmark, and Netherland paused the use of the vaccine due to report of fatal side effects.
South Africa had earlier abandoned the use of the AstraZeneca jab, stating that it was ineffective against the COVID-19 strain in the country.
Although the Oxford-made AstraZeneca Vaccine is not as effective as other developed vaccines, it is favored among African countries because it is cheaper and easier to store.

While speaking at a news conference, the director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risk.
The director of WHO Africa, Matshidiso Moeti on Thursday encouraged urged countries to continue the vaccination because we are in a race against time.

Although the vaccine has been confirmed to be safe by an EU medicine regulator, many countries are still skeptical about its use.
