US to Distribute 500 Million Doses of COVID 19 Vaccine to Nigeria and Others

  • The United States is set to distribute 500 million doses of COVID 19 vaccine across low and middle-income countries
  • The vaccines will reportedly be donated by Pfizer and BioNTech following an existing agreement with the U.S. government
  • The vaccines will reach the 55 member states of the African Union, which includes Nigeria

Pfizer and BioNTech will reportedly provide 500 million doses of COVID 19 vaccine to the US government.

The vaccines will be distributed among lower-income countries following as part of an agreement between the two parties.

The agreement states that the extra vaccines will be provided at no not-for-profit price to disadvantaged countries.

This brings the total number of vaccines to be donated among such countries to 1 billion.

In accordance with the agreement, the US government will allocate the COVID 19 vaccine doses to 92 low- and lower-middle-income countries and the 55 member states of the African Union.

As expected, Nigeria will be among the recipients of the vaccine but how many doses the country will receive has not been disclosed.

Deliveries of the initial 500 million doses began in August but the total 1 billion doses will only be delivered by September 2022.

Developed nations like the United States and European countries have had a bountiful supply of vaccines since they were developed, to the detriment of lower-income countries.
