The vaccines came in two planes which landed at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport in Abuja and it was received by officials of United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

This is the second major batch of vaccines that Nigeria will receive since the delivery of 4 million doses of the AstraZeneca COVID 19 vaccine in March through the COVAX scheme.

Vaccination had been put on hold after the exhaustion of the first 4 million doses of vaccine but the health ministry may give the green light for continuation.

The vaccine received on Monday is an mRNA type of vaccine that is administered through injection. The second dose is usually administered 28 days after the first.

The received vaccine will help Nigeria in the battle against the third wave of COVID-19 as cases have been on the rise.

The emergence of the Delta variant has contributed to the rise, with a total of 174,000 cases recorded since the index cases last year.
