3 Additional Omicron Variant Cases Confirmed in Nigeria

  • The latest addition brings Nigeria’s total cases of the strain to 6 in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported the detection of 3 new cases of the Omicron variant in the country.

The disclosure was contained in a recently released statement by the NCDC that was signed by the Director-General Ifedayo Adetifa.

Adetifa confirmed that the new cases were detected in travelers who had recently been to South Africa.

The newly recorded cases denote that Nigeria now has a total of 6 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant since the discovery of the strain.

The NCDC also disclosed that all Nigeria’s Omicron variant cases so far were discovered in people with recent travel history to South Africa.

The agency will now continue genomic surveillance activities across the country to sequence all positive COVID-19 samples.

Meanwhile, the Delta variant which was discovered earlier this year remains the dominant strain of the virus.
