WhatsApp to Hide “Last Seen” From Strangers

WhatsApp to Hide “Last Seen” From Strangers

  • WhatsApp is rolling out a new privacy feature that will hide your “last seen” from people that you don’t know
  • Previously, users’ “Last seen” was set to “Everyone” by default, allowing anyone on WhatsApp to know if you’re online
  • With the latest update, “Last seen” has been switched to “My Contact” which means that only people on your contact list will have access to that information

WhatsApp is stepping up user privacy by making your “last seen” status unknown to people who you don’t know or haven’t chatted with.

The “Last seen” which was previously set to “Everyone” by default has been switched to “My contacts” following this update.

It means that visibility of your status is only limited to people that you have their contacts saved on your device.

While the “My Contacts” option for “Last seen” was already available, it wasn’t selected by default on the messaging app.

Users also have the option of setting it to “Nobody”, which will prevent every WhatsApp user from knowing when last you were online.

This isn’t the ono change that the Meta-owned company is intent on making to its instant messaging platform.

In November, WABetaInfo reported that the messaging app was testing a “My Contacts Except” opinion, which lets users hide their status from specific contacts.

The company has been putting in efforts to upscale user privacy and this was shown when it introduce a default option for disappearing messages earlier this month.
