Twitter Takeover: Board Agrees to Release Spam Data to Elon Musk

  • Twitter’s board has finally decided to comply with Elon Musk’s request for company data.
  • The billionaire threatened to pull out of the $44 billion Twitter takeover deal if the company fails to provide data about its spam accounts.
  • The company plans to release the data to the Tesla boss as early as this week.

After refusing for weeks, Twitter has agreed to comply with Elon Musk’s demands for platform data. A report from the Washington Post revealed that a person familiar with the company confirmed the development.

The report says that the billionaire is now planning to give Musk access to the “firehose” API, which contains every tweet that has ever been posted on the platform.

In April, Musk agreed to a deal with Twitter’s board for the takeover of the social media company. Since then, the Tesla boss has surrounded the deal with doubts, expressing worry about the number of bots on the platform. Musk believes that Twitter’s bot is severely more than the company estimates it to be.

In an SEC filing released on Monday, the billionaire accused Twitter of breaching the agreement by failing to provide him with sufficient data regarding automated accounts on the platform. However, quite a few people believe that this is just a ploy by Musk to cancel or renegotiate the Twitter takeover deal on more favorable terms.

Twitter’s firehose API is one of the company’s most closely held resources as it shows what a user would see if they followed every account on Twitter. Although the firehouse is a very valuable raw material on automated activity, the scale of the data makes it unwieldy. It will likely take a lot of time and resources to access the information that Musk wants about the platform.
