Facebook announced on Tuesday that it plans to stop using facial-recognition software that could automatically identify people in photos and videos.
The company which was recently renamed Meta has also disclosed that data gathered through the use of this software over the years will be deleted.
The company currently has a database of over 1 billion people’s faces gathered from photos and videos uploaded to its platform.
The company announced the move in a blog post by artificial intelligence vice president Jerome Pesenti.
It comes after the company was criticized for the potential damage of its social media platforms by a whistleblower.
Facebook will, however, continue upgrading its social recognition software and it may be used in future products such including social networks and picture-taking glasses.

In addition, facial recognition has been riddled with controversy as concerns emerge about the accuracy of the software and racial bias.
Various cases have shown that the technology is less accurate at identifying people of color.
