SpaceX CEO Elon Muk has revealed that the company’s satellite internet network will end its beta phase next month in October.
The end of the beta phase is coming exactly a year after it was launched in October 2020.
The billionaire disclosed this on Tuesday on microblogging platform Twitter.
The end of the open beta phase comes two months later that Musk stated while speaking at the Mobile World Congress.
Starlink’s system will comprise a constellation of about 12,000 satellites across the earth that will beam broadband internet service.
So far, customers who subscribed to the beta phase of the internet service paid $499 for Starlink’s terminals and $99 monthly for subscriptions. The terminals comprise a satellite dish and a Wi-Fi router.
In August, Musk disclosed that that 100,000 had been shipped to 14 countries but as the beta test ends, more counties will have access to the internet service.
The internet service touts 100Mbps download and 20Mbps upload speeds, and it will be sold directly to people in rural areas.
Meanwhile, Starlink may also make its way to Nigeria as the beta test ends. Earlier this year, Naija FM reported that representatives of the company met with Nigerian officials to discuss the possibilities of extending its service.
