A Non-fungible token (NFT) of an arrest warrant for South Africa’s apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, has been auctioned for $130,550.
The sale of the NFT was confirmed by Ahren Posthumus, the chief executive officer of Momint as he revealed that the proceeds from the sale will be used to fund a heritage site that documents South Africa’s fight for democracy.
Posthumus revealed that the funds will be given o the Lilieslead Museum Heritage Site, which had also received the original document of the arrest warrant in 2004.
The CEO of the digital auctioneer disclosed that the reserve price of the Nelson Mandela NFT was $61,6000 but it ended up being bought by an online buyer for $130,550. Records show that the buyer was a foreigner that is based in the United Arab Emirates.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Posthumus also stated that the deal will help the museum’s site stay afloat after being badly affected by the lack of tourism, caused by the pandemic.

The buyer of the Nelson Mandela NFT will have exclusive access to the original arrest warrant at Lilliesleaf Museum. It follows a similar $50,000 auction of a pen gun owned by another freedom fighter, Oliver Tambo.
Nelson Mandela who eventually became South Africa’s first democratic black president was arrested on August 5, 1962, and jailed for 27 years.
