Today, June 12 2021, Nigeria is 22 years into its inaugural celebration of democracy day that was formerly May 29th.

While there is still a lot to be corrected, Naija FM celebrates this year’s anniversary with 5 facts about this day in history.

1.

The first-ever democracy day was celebrated on May 29, 1999, following the swearing-in of Olusegun Obasanjo as the President of the federation.

The first Democracy celebration marked the end of 27 years of military rule since 1966.

There was however a brief stint of democracy, Ruth Alh. Shehu Shagari between 1979 and 1983.

3. Democracy in Nigeria was only possible after Gen Abdulsalam Abubakar, the last military head of state promised a transition.

It also led to the creation and adoption of a new constitution on May 5, 1999.

May 29 was proposed as the day for the inaugural celebration by the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

Democracy day

May 29 was opposed as democracy day by many Nigerians because it was the day that Biafra leader Chukwuemeka Ojukwu declared Biafra a Sovereign state.
