Caleb Obari, a 21-year-old Nigerian that recently graduated has been found dead in Odesa, Oblast, Ukraine. The young man was reported missing after attending a yacht party with friends.
After weeks of search, the deceased was found dead on Saturday, Sept 12, 2020, along the coastline in Chornomorsk. The Ukrainian police have stated that the cause of death is yet to be established. Although further investigations are ongoing, the case is being treated as an accident.
Obari was invited to a party on the yacht by Vera Topalova, the owner of a bar in Odesa. Caleb was on the boat with 9 other Ukrainians went the boat set sail from Sauvignon yacht club. The boat went about four kilometers but on returning, the Nigerian was not onboard.
A friend of Caleb Obari stated that on arriving, the rest of the passengers handed the deceased belongings to him. Among the items handed to him was Caleb’s mobile phone, although they didn’t give him an explanation.
Days after his disappearance, Vera Topalova admitted to inviting him on the yacht, stating that he went swimming with other guests. The bar owner also stated that the deceased went swimming with other guests and he might have drowned since he didn’t know how to swim.
Since Caleb Obari’s death, various social media users have demanded justice using #JusticeForCaleb. A protest was also organized near the Nigerian embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ukraine.
