Nigerians have gone on a rampage on social media following rumours that the Federal Government demanded everyone’s IMEI numbers.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has disclosed that Nigerians are not required to submit their International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers for now.
The commission disclosed that it is in the process of creating a Device Management System to protect subscribers from phone theft and other offences concerned with mobile telecom.
The Device management system will also help the commission to identify fake devices and eliminate them from the network.
The Director of Public Affairs of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde disclosed this in a statement released on Friday afternoon.
According to NCC, rumours of the IMEI submission came from the Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration which was launched by President Muhammadu Buhari.
