The governor Ortom of Benue state has disclosed more information about the circumstances in which militia, Teriwase Akwaza was killed. Teriwase Akwaza popularly known as Gana was reported to be one of the most wanted criminals in Benue state.
On Tuesday, September 8, Governor Ortom revealed to the media that Gana was interrupted on his way to surrender to the Government of the state. The governor revealed that he was surprised why the army went to arrest him since they were aware of the amnesty.
The Governor stated that he was waiting for the arrival of some militants who wanted to surrender when he got a call that Gana had been taken into custody by some soldiers in Yandev roundabout in Gboko.
Governor Ortom’s account of this event is different from that of the army who claimed that the criminal was killed in a gun fight.
There has been some criticism surrounding the way in which Gana was killed. Former lawmaker, Shehu Sani has criticized the circumstances surrounding the killing. The lawmaker stated on his twitter page that the development will discourage other bandits who want to surrender.
