The Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu has stated that the price of food in Nigeria is reducing, contrary to most people’s opinions.
He made this statement when he appeared on National TV station, Channels on Friday, September 11. Garba was invited after the President’s decision to stop the release of foreign exchange for fertilizer and food importation.
Many people disagreed with this directive from the president including Dr. Ahmed Adamu, a senior lecturer at the University of Abuja. The lecturer stated that it bad timing on the government’s part to implement the directive given that we don’t have the infrastructure and facilities to sustain food demand in the country. Dr. Adamu also stated that the country is facing food insecurity due to the inability of farmers to produce enough.
On the other hand, Garba Shehu stated that the cost of food is not connected to the closure of the borders. He stated that contrary to popular opinions, experts have revealed that the cost of foodstuff has reduced in the country. According to Garba, the prices of millets and rice have gone done from N24, 000 and N20, 000 to N12, 000 and N20, 000 respectively.
Garba Shehu also stated that the best place to get more information about the price of food in the market and not from whispers around. He advised journalists to send their correspondent to the market for more factual information.
