FG Postpones Passport Application By 1 Week

FG Postpones Passport Application By 1 Week

Muhammad Babandede (The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service) made an announcement concerning the postponement of new passport application, which was previously stated to begin on June 1, 2020 by one week, making the new commencement date June 8, 2021.

Based on a statement made on Tuesday by Amos Okpu (The Service’s Public Relations Officer), titled “Clearance of backlog of passport applications,” Muhammad Babandede was quoted as making the announcement during a media chat at their headquarters in Abuja.

It was stated that, several applicants are already receiving their passports across all issuing centres and it’s causing overcrowding, and in other for issuing centres to strictly adhere to the COVID-19 protocols, new applications can’t be accommodated.

Therefore, Rauf Aregbesola (Minister of Interior), extended the commencement of the new passport application that was previously scheduled for June 1, 2021 by a week.

This extension period will be used to attend to all awaiting applicants to collect their passports, clear the existing backlogs, and also to enhance systems automation for the commencement of the new passports.

NIS Comptroller General promised, a total commitment in enhancing good service delivery to all passport applicants.

He said that, a total of 230,500 applications have been cleared and the passports produced, and about 43,350 passports are yet to be collected.

Also, he added that, the NIS will upload the information of all Passports that are yet to be collected on its website www.immigration.gov.ng for the attention of the public.
