The Federal government of Nigeria has begun the extradition process from suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, through the office of the Attorney General of the Federation.
The former police officer is set to stand trial before the US District Court of the Central District of California for his involvement in a $1.1 million fraud involving popular Nigerian Instagrammer, Hushpuppi.
His charges include a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and identity theft.
According to Nairametrics, the application for the extradition is marked; FHC/ABJ/CS/249/2022 and was filed before the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Terhemba Tsoho.
In a statement that was issued to the public on Thursday, Justice Tsoho confirmed that his office had received a request for the extradition of the suspended police officer. He however noted that the extradition process is multifaceted and involves many components.
It will be recalled, that the US Justice Department requested the extradition of Abba Kyari in August 2021, for his involvement in fraud with Hushpuppi. Kyari was allegedly bribed by the Hushpuppi to get an associate arrested in Nigeria.
