On day 4 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin announced that he has ordered the country’s military to place nuclear weapons on high alert. The Russian leader claims that the decision was made in response to aggressive statements from the leading NATO powers.
The decision means that Russia’s military nuclear weapons are ready for launch and can be released quickly. The announcement raised fears about the possibility of the tensions in Ukraine, escalating into a nuclear war.
In his statement, Putin also mentions the hard financial sanctions that have been imposed on Russia and himself. During a meeting with the country’s top officials, Putin directed the Russian defense minister and the chief of military’s General Staff to put nuclear deterrent forces ready for combat duty.
Vladimir Putin said:
“Western countries aren’t only taken unfriendly actions against our country in the economic sphere, but top officials from leading NATO members made aggressive statements regarding our country”
Meanwhile, the white house has criticized Putin’s decision to place nuclear weapons on high alert, claiming that it is a strategy to justify more aggression.

A part of the White House’s press secretary, Jen Psaki’s statement reads:
“This is really a pattern that we’ve seen from President Putin through the course of this conflict, which is manufacturing threats that don’t exist in order to justify further aggression.”
