The President of Haiti Jovenel Moise has been assassinated by unknown gunmen at his residence in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to the country’s Prime Minister and acting president Claude Joseph, the private home of the president was attacked by armed men at around 1 am.
Local news website Juno 7 reported that the president was assassinated by a group of unknown Spanish individuals after they broke into his home in Port-au-Prince.
The news website reports that the president was “mortally wounded” while his wife sustained injuries from a gunshot wound.

Haiti has been in the middle of a political crisis for the past few months.
In early February, hundreds marched through the suburbs of the president’s home to demand an end to the current government’s administration.

Having been moved to the brink of poverty thanks to various natural disasters, the Caribbean country has struggled to develop.

President Jovenel Moise had disclosed that there was an assassination attempt on his life in February but it was aborted by the police.
Mr Moise was elected the president of Haiti in November 2016 and he held the post from 2017 until his assassination in 2021.
