The highest court in South Africa has sentenced former president Jacob Zuma to 15 months in prison for contempt.

Justice Sisi Khampepe made this ruling on Tuesday after Zuma failed to appear in court to answer the anti-corruption commission regarding his involvement in corruption during his time as president.

The constitutional court has ordered that Zuma presents himself to any police station in Nkandlas his hometown, or Johannesburg.

Judge Khampepe accused the former president of carrying out a campaign against the court in an attempt to “corrode” its legitimacy.

The South African politician made one appearance at an inquiry but be failed to appear before the anti-corruption body after that.

Jacob Zuma’s time in power from 2009 to 2018 was filled with allegations of corruption against the country’s leader.

Various businessmen and politicians were accused of conniving to influence decisions during his regime.

Zuma’s had repeatedly stated that he was not guilty of the allegations, claiming to be a victim of a political conspiracy.

The ex-president also pleaded not guilty in a separate trial last month where he was accused of being involved in corruption in a $5 billion arms deal carried out in the 1990s.
