2022 French Presidential Election: Emmanuel Macron Defeats Le Pen

Pollsters have projected that Emmanuel Macron will win the 2022 French presidential election. France’s president is set to fend off a challenge from right-wing candidate Marine Le Pen in the runoff vote.

 

2022 French Presidential election

An analysis of voting data by pollsters Ipsos & Sopra Steria shows that Macron is expected to take 58.2% of the total votes. This significantly dwarfs Le Pen’s 41.8% projected votes.

Projections are typically released by French pollsters at  8 p.m local time when the polls close in major cities. This is several hours before the official result gets to be released by the French Interior Ministry.

The projections are based on data from voting stations that close by 7 p.m in France. These same projections are usually used by candidates and French media to declare the winner of the election.

Once the announcement becomes official, Emmanuel Macron, 44 will become the first French president to be re-elected in 20 years.

Le Pen

Le Pen was contesting the French presidential election for the third time after losing in both 2012 and 2017. Her result in the 2022 French presidential election represents progress from 2017. That year, she ended up with 34% of the votes to Macron’s 66%.
