Poland Rejects World Cup Match Against Russia in Protest to Ukraine Invasion

As more countries begin to speak up against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, The Football Association of Poland has announced that the national team will not play their forthcoming World Cup play-offs against Russia.
The winners of the match which was scheduled to be played on March 25, would face either Sweden or Czech Republic for a place in the World Cup proper.
Meanwhile, The Polish FA have also offered to host all football home matches while the Ukrainian national team is unable to play in the country. Ukraine are due to play Scotland in their own World Cup play-off on March 25, and the winner will face either Wales or Austria for a place in the finals in Qatar.

A spokesperson for the Poland’s FA has disclosed that the country is in talks with the Swedish and Czech federations to bring forward a common position to FIFA. Legendary Polish striker, Robert Lewandowski also agrees with the decision. The footballer made a tweet on Saturday morning saying:
“I can’t imagine playing a match with the Russian National Team in a situation when armed aggression in Ukraine continues.”
According to Sky Sports, a FIFA spokesperson has stated that the situation is being monitored and an update about the game will be communicated in due course.
