A-League midfielder Josh Cavallo has come out as gay, becoming the only known current male footballer playing top-flight football to be out.
The 21-year-old footballer disclosed his homosexual status in a touching video that was posted on Adelaide United’s social media.
“I’m a footballer and I’m gay. All I want to do is play football and be treated equally.”
The Australian left-back becomes the first active gay professional footballer to come out in the league’s top division.
Cavallo claims that performing to the best of his abilities is exhausting while living a double life.
He claimed that he has been worried about how people will react to him coming out and if they will treat him differently.
In a heartfelt post that was shared alongside the video, Josh Cavallo said that he couldn’t be more happy with his decision to come out.

Only a few top male footballers have come out as gay during their careers in the past.
Some of the famous football stars to have come out in the past are Robbie Rogers, Thomas Hitzlsperger, and Andy Brennan.
