UK Removes Nigeria and Others From COVID 19 Red List

The United Kingdom’s government has disclosed that Nigeria and other countries will be removed from the COVID 19 red list
-
The ban on the 11 countries on the red list will be lifted from 4 am on Wednesday
-
The red list was reintroduced in late November as the country aimed to manage the spread of COVID 19 following the emergence of the Omicron variant
The UK government has announced that all 11 countries previously placed on its COVID 19 red list will be removed from 4 am on Wednesday.
The countries affected by the ban are Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are on the list.
The COVID 19 red list was reintroduced in late November this year after the emergence of the Omicron variant.
While disclosing the u-turn Health Secretary Sajid Javid said that the variant had spread so wide that imposing a travel restriction had little purpose.
“Now that there is community transmission of Omicron in the UK and Omicron has spread so widely across the world, the travel red list is now less effective in slowing the incursion of Omicron from abroad,”
According to the previous rules, all UK arrivals from countries on the red-list are required to pay for and self-isolate in a government-approved facility for 10 days.

With the new rules in place, however, it was confirmed that those currently in isolation would be allowed to leave early.
This will be welcome news to people from countries like South Africa and Nigeria who had plans to travel to the UK but couldn’t.
