COVID-19: Rampant Cases of Delta Variant Raises Fear in Nigeria

  • The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has revealed that the total number of delta variant cases in Nigeria has risen to 10
  • According to the Director-General of the NCDC, most of the cases recorded were recorded in travellers coming into the country through Lagos and Abuja Airports
  • Meanwhile, the federal government has ordered the reopening of COVID-19 isolation centres in anticipation of a spike in cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported that the highly transmissible COVID-19 Delta variant has become more rampant in Nigeria.

The Director-General of the NCDC Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu disclosed this during an update of the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday

According to DG, the country has recorded 10 cases so far, with most of them being incoming travellers at the international airports in Lagos and Abuja.

Also, present at the event was the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, who disclosed that global cases of COVID-19 have increased in the last 24 hours due to the transmissibility of the Delta variant.

Meanwhile, the health minister also issued a directive from the federal government stating that all COVID-19 isolation centres be reactivated in anticipation of a spike in COVID-19 cases.

The health minister also revealed that from now, stricter measures will be put in place for incoming passengers from countries with high COVID-19 cases.

The minister also disclosed that rapid testing kits had been to all entry points into the country, including Idioroko and Seme borders.

Based on the last report on July 26, 171324 COVID-19 cases had been recorded in the country with 2134 deaths.
