Africa’s COVID 19 Cases Decline as Vaccination Hits 182 Million

As of today, April 20, 2022, the confirmed cases of COVID 19 in Africa has hit 11,465,800, according to an update from the Africa Center for Disease Control.

The disease control agency also disclosed that 282,567,569 doses of vaccine have been administered across 55 countries in the continent.

Meanwhile, reported deaths in Africa have reached 252,644 as 9,646,671 people have recovered from the virus.

South Africa leads in terms of reported cases with 3,743,582 people testing positive so far. A total of 100,195 deaths have also been recorded in the country.

Other countries that have been heavily affected by the pandemic include Morocco with 1,164,467 cases, Tunisia ( 1,039,532 ), Egypt ( 515,645 ), Libya ( 501,862 ),  Ethiopia ( 470,305 ), and Kenya ( 323,630 ).

For Nigeria, 255,670 COVID 19 cases have been confirmed in total, while 249,874 have recovered from the disease. There have been 3,143 deaths, and 2,653 active cases remain, according to the NCDC.

Africa CDC’s recent reports have also shown that COVID 19 cases in the continent have been on the decline for 16 weeks, with deaths also dropping during that period. Statistics indicate that infections plummeted from over 300,000 cases weekly at the start of the year, to 20,000 in the week ending April 10.

The World Health Organization has stated that the infection rate has not been this low since April 2020. Before this, the previous longest decline in COVID infection was between August 1 and October 10.
