BioNTech and Pfizer have disclosed that their jointly developed coronavirus vaccine is effective against the Omicron variant when taken in three doses.
A laboratory study done by the makers found that the omicron variant wasn’t neutralized by 2 doses of the vaccine by 3 doses were effective.
According to the study, a third shot of the vaccine provides a comparable level of protection against the Omicron variant as two doses against other variants.
The companies added that an Omicron-specific COVID 19 vaccine was already in development and will be available by March.
Pfizer chief executive Albert Bourla said:
“Although two doses of the vaccine may still offer protection against severe disease caused by the Omicron strain, it’s clear from these preliminary data that protection is improved with the third dose of our vaccine,”

The emergence of the new Omicron variant of COVID-19 has resulted in a rise in infection numbers across the world.
The strain has been found in 57 countries so far but resulted in no death, according to the World Health Organization.
